The Benefits of AC Field Technology

By harnessing the power of AC field technology, the FSM4000 operates with a field frequency that is around ten times higher than what is offered by an electromagnetic flowmeter using pulsed DC field technology. Together with this high field frequency, special digital filters ensure that the FSM4000 is only affected by process noise within an extremely small range.

Using the above example of a noise spectrum for a solid-loaded liquid, the figure shows the extremely small range in which the FSM4000 can be affected by process noise. The highest proportion of process noise occurs in the low-frequency range, which reaches up to approximately 15 Hz. Electromagnetic flowmeters based on pulsed DC field technology operate within this frequency range, meaning that the FSM4000 is ideally suited to flow measurement for solid-loaded liquids and ensures an output signal without any interference

ABB - Choosing the right pressure sensor

When choosing a pressure sensor for process control and monitoring in a gas flow system or a distillery component, plant operators are faced with an array of choices.

Modern pressure sensors are equipped to provide accurate measurements under arduous operating conditions, providing outstanding resistances to a range of industry-specific corrosives. Absolute, differential, and temperature-compensated pressure measurements can be acquired for containers and pipelines containing: pharmaceutical solvents; flue gas; heated crude oil; and more.
​
This vast range of pressure sensors represents an industrial problem of choice. The suitability of many pressure components is likely to intersect with multiple applications and sectors, yet there are unique attributes to consider when choosing a pressure sensor for your own facility.
This article will outline four key things to consider when choosing a pressure sensor.
1. Pressure Sensor Type

The primary consideration for selecting a pressure sensor is the type of component that your application requires. For example, negative pressure values cannot be quantified by a gage transmitter, while temperature-compensated pressure measurements can only be carried out by a multivariable pressure sensor or an array of separate pressure and temperature monitors. Pressure transmitters can typically be broken down into four distinct types:
​
  • Absolute pressure measurement sensors use full-vacuum conditions as a reference point, quantifying the pressure levels of a container as a value over 0 bar;
  • Differential pressure sensors measure the difference in applied force at two points within a flow system or a process container;
  • Gauge pressure measurement instruments use atmospheric pressure of 1.01325 bar (15 psia) as a reference point;
  • Multivariable pressure sensors measure the differential and absolute pressure, then compensate that with temperature measurements.
2. Pressure Sensor Range

The pressure range is a superficially simplistic consideration for choosing a pressure sensor. Operators typically depend upon pre-determined application pressure ranges and select a transmitter that matches those values. However, density changes or abrupt pressure variations can reduce the efficacy of measurement equipment, and in extreme cases can damage the component. In such instances, it is advisable to select a sensor with a higher pressure range and calibrate it accordingly.
3. Atmospheric / Process Conditions of Application​

Prior to component selection, it is paramount that you consider the corrosive influences that your pressure sensor could be subjected to during operation. Seals may need to be wetted to withstand solvent corrosion in laboratory applications, while special considerations should be taken to protect a pressure sensor’s internal electronics. Corrosive process media or incident humidity can damage transmitters, reducing measurement accuracy and increasing the risk of premature component failure.
4. Onboarding Times

Installation of new components usually impacts a facility’s throughput due to mechanical downtime during integration and reduced efficacy from onboarding processes. For example, the pressure-sensitive diaphragms of a transmitter must be welded to measurement sites to acquire force values and convert them into electrical signals. Ease of weldability and low wiring footprints are critical for rapid and efficient component integration in applications where extended periods of component inactivity are not an option.

Ruffneck makes extra heavy duty unit heaters (including heavy gauge steel construction) to meet the most demanding service and long life requirements for rugged industrial applications, such as space heating and liquid cooling. The HP Series heaters are suitable for a wide range of heating fluids including steam, hot water, glycol, oil, etc. Explosion-proof models suitable for hazardous locations are available on custom order.

Engineered for ease of maintenance, all Ruffneck parts are easily removed. All fasteners are plated capscrews; no sheet metal screws are used. Heat exchanger cores are of steel construction with tension wound, close fitting aluminium fins. They are resistant to corrosive agents (including hydrogen sulfide).

​All Ruffneck HP units are equipped with a narrow-gap, epoxy coated fan guard. Choose from several optional UL listed and/or CSA approved motors with various voltages, phases and frequencies. The CMF310 is the latest addition to ABB's family of universal process controllers. It is a unique field-mountable controller that enables wall-, or pipe-mounting without the need for an additional enclosure. IP66, NEMA 4X and UL Class 1, Div 2 approvals make the CMF310 suitable for almost all environments. The powerful operator display features a full-color 9 cm (3.5 in.) text display that is simple to navigate and easy to use.

ControlMaster is a state-of-the art range of process controllers featuring a striking, full-color TFT display that provides the operator with a crystal clear view of the process — enhancing ease of use. A concise, line-up makes it easy to select the correct product for an application.

Each instrument provides a comprehensive display of process status using crystal clear display. The simple-to-use user interface delivers clear text prompts that make installation, commissioning and operation quick and easy. Suitable for basic to demanding applications, functionality includes cascade, feed forward, adaptive, predictive and ratio control strategies. The faceplate has IP66 and NEMA 4X environmental protection rating and communication options includes Ethernet, RS485, Modbus TCP/RTU and a web server for remote process monitoring.

Temperature sensor for quick, easy and universal surface mounting. High precision by taking environment conditions such as ambient temperature into account. The SensyTemp TSP341-N includes a transmitter based on TTH300. Integrated new algorithms enable the high precise temperature calculation. Output via 4 to 20 mA and HART protocol.
